In Tucson in 2008 there was talk of the new Ajoites in Quartz from the Messina mine in South Africa. Here is what happened according to several sources. There were maintenance workers in a truck cleaning in the old Messina mine area when the truck fell into a ditch. In this ditch was a pocket of gorgeous Ajoites. So one of the best materials in the show in 2008 was the new Ajoites. Messina Ajoite in Quartz crystals are becoming harder and harder to find and are rare.

The original Messina Mine, has been closed and flooded since the mid 1990's. At the 2019 East Coast Gem & Mineral Show I was able to bring home this beautiful cluster. This specimen measures 3 5/16" x 2 1/2" x 2 5/16 and weighs 179.5 Grams.

There are at least 8 crystals with Ajoite phantoms. The tall crystal has a Hematite phantom.
